Ingredients

Gather everything before you start cooking.

Main

  • 3 lb boneless pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

Serving

  • 12 slider buns or hamburger buns
  • 1 bottle (18 oz) BBQ sauce
  • 1 cup coleslaw (optional)

Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pork

Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Rub the spice mixture generously all over the pork shoulder.

    ~5 min

  2. 2

    Set Up the Slow Cooker

Place the seasoned pork shoulder in the slow cooker. Pour the chicken broth and apple cider vinegar around the pork.

    ~2 min

  3. 3

    Slow Cook

Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours, until the pork is very tender and easily shreds with a fork. The internal temperature should reach 205°F (96°C) for optimal shredding.

    ~480 min

  4. 4

    Shred the Pork

Carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it in a large bowl. Using two forks, shred the pork into small pieces, discarding any excess fat. Skim any excess fat from the cooking liquid in the slow cooker, then add about 1 cup of the liquid to the shredded pork to keep it moist.

    ~10 min

  5. 5

    Combine with BBQ Sauce

Stir in your favorite BBQ sauce to taste, ensuring all the shredded pork is well coated. If you prefer, serve the BBQ sauce on the side.

    ~3 min

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve the warm pulled pork on slider buns or hamburger buns. Top with coleslaw if desired.

    ~5 min
